What is Reiki?

The technique of Reiki is used for stress reduction and promotes healing from within. Reiki is classified as a biofield therapy, the use of subtle energy fields in and around the body for positive health effects. It is non-invasive, stimulates the body’s natural healing abilities, and promotes a sense of overall wellbeing. It helps to comprise the category of "energy therapy/medicine", one of the five domains of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) recognized by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) in the United States.

Reiki (pronounced: ray - key) is Universal Life Force Energy. Rei (ray) refers to the universal or boundless quality of the energy, and Ki (key) refers to the life force or energy which makes up everything in the universe, both physical and non-physical.  Reiki is believed to be over 2,500 years old.

Reiki as a Complementary Treatment
Reiki is an effective complement to medical and psychological treatment. Research has not only indicated it to be effective in decreasing pain and anxiety in general, but has also shown shorter surgery times, patient reports of comparatively lower pain and anxiety levels and decreased use of pain medications post-operatively when Reiki is used as an intervention during the perioperative period. Many hospitals and nursing homes are utilizing Reiki to treat patients in their facilities. In fact, some doctors and nurses are becoming Reiki practitioners.

Benefits of Reiki

Reiki can benefit anyone of any age, regardless of faith, religion, or philosophy, current medications, treatment regimen, or health status.  Reiki heals on all levels and has been shown to have no negative side effects.  It has been shown to:

  • Enhance the body’s natural ability to heal

  • Address all acute and chronic illnesses and conditions

  • Strengthen the immune system

  • Increase energy, clarity of thought, intuition, and alertness

  • Promote restful sleep, relaxation, inner peace and personal awareness

  • Decrease stress, pain, depression and anxiety

  • Improve overall wellness – physical, spiritual, mental and emotional

What to expect during a Reiki session…

A Reiki session includes a brief discussion on what the client’s concerns are and what they hope to achieve from the visit.  A treatment can last anywhere from 10 minutes to 1 hour.  The client lies on a Reiki table, fully clothed, and the practitioner places their hands directly on, or a few inches above, the client’s body.  The Reiki energy then flows to the area of the body in need of healing.  The only responsibility of the client is to relax and enjoy!

Reiki is experienced differently by different people.  Most enter a deeply relaxed state of peace.  Many see colors or feel pulsating heat, cold or a tingling sensation during a session.  In some people, pain, allergies, or other health issues may diminish or completely disappear. However, just as most health conditions are not created overnight, outcomes vary and may take time, patience, and / or more than one treatment to reach and maintain optimum results.  Reiki is very effective when used routinely, over time.

Usui Reiki and Karuna Reiki® are offered at The H.O.P.E. Center.
